Technical cost & considerations:  This resource does not require the use of any additional costs or technology.

EVALUATION

Description of Learning Activity:  Students are given a problem and need to work collaboratively to find a solution.  Students will develop strong problem solving and decision making skills.

1. Learning activity types

  • Explore - students need to inquire about certain food costs and preparation skills

  • Apply - students are given a realistic problem that requires the use of mathematics to create a solution

2. What mathematics is being learned?

NCTM Standards

  • NCTM - N&O - understand numbers: students use rations and proportions to understand relationships

VA SOL Strands

  • 8.3 a: The student will solve practical problems involving rational numbers, percents, rations, and proportions

Proficiency Strands

  • adaptive reasoning - students are faced with a problem and need to formulate a logical solution

  • productive disposition - this realistic problem shows students how mathematics applies to everyday life

Additional comments on what is being learned

3. How is the mathematics represented?

The mathematics is represented visually, graphically, and numerically.  Students are faced with organizing a luncheon based on mathematical skills.

What role does technology play?

Advantages

  • The technology provides additional resources and guidelines for teachers to follow

Disadvantages

  • students do not need technology in order to complete the project

Unique contribution

  • the technology does provide educators with a unique learning experience

Affordances

  • Communicating & Collaborating – students need to collaborate in order to construct a menu for the luncheon

  • Capturing & Creating -students engage in creating and providing a menu for a luncheon

5. How does the technology fit or interact with the social context of learning?

The technology outlines the group project and everything that it entails.

6. What do teachers and learners need to know?

There is nothing complicated about this resource.  All that is required is reading and downloading a pdf file for students to compete.  If you want students to engage in additional activities it is encouraged, but no additional resources are provided.

7.  How could this resource supplement/facilitate PBL?

This resource gives students an authentic project to show students how versatile mathematics really is.
