NLVM - ALGEBRA BALANCE SCALES

SOLVING EQUATIONS

Use a given equation or create your own!  Balance the scale according to the given variables, coefficients, and constants.  Solve using mathematical operations and develop a process that will work with similar equations.

INTERACTIVATE - LENGTH, PERIMETER, & AREA

GEOMETRY

Change the shape and size of the figure!  Find the area and perimeter of the given shape based on the grid.  Use basic math to help you figure out the answers or come up with your own method for calculating area and perimeter.

MATH PLAYGROUND - ALIEN ANGLES

GEOMETRY (ANGLE RECOGNITION)

Curator: Chris Enders

Alien Angles is a game that asks students to estimate what different angles look like.  During a space exploration, some aliens get lost in space and need to be rescued.  The angle thhey are lost at appears and students need to estimate within 5 degrees what that angle would look like.  There are only 10 aliens to find, but the game can be played over and over.  It also helps students become used to using protractors when it appears for the answer.

QUIA - BATTLESHIP (COMBINING LIKE TERMS)

SIMPLIFYING EXPRESSIONS

Battleship allows students to incorporate a favorite childhood strategy game with simplifying expressions.  Students play against the computer to 'sink' all of the ships.  A hit only counts when an expression is simplified correctly.

Educational Games

This page has several games for students to practice various mathematics skills.  If you click on the picture, it will take you to the game.  Each game has a brief description and a link to its evaluation.

MATH PLAYGROUND - MATH AT THE MALL

PERCENTS, TIP, TAX, INTEREST (CONSUMER MATH)

Curator: Hilary Pehrson

Math at the Mall is an interactive activity in which students practice calculating percents. Specifically, students visit the bank, the gym, the toy store, and the cafe and at each of these different places students have to calculate the percentage of the interest, discount, or tips. Additionally, students then have to calculate the total bill, sale price, or total amount of money earned. Due to the scaffolded nature of the tool (the questions are broken down into steps) this would be a very helpful tool for students struggling to understand these mathematical concepts.

MATH SNACKS - MONSTER SCHOOL BUS

NUMBERS & OPERATIONS

Curator:  Terry Cheng

Monster School Bus is an online game in which the player is a school bus driver who must pick up monsters at various locations and transport them to school. The school bus can only hold a certain number of monsters at a time, so the player/school bus driver must group the locations into sets based on the number of monsters at each location and how may monsters it takes to create a full load on the bus. For example, ten aliens will fit on the bus, but it takes 20 gremlins to create a full load. Creating full loads of students on the bus gives the player the opportunity to change the normal-looking buildings in the town into monster buildings.

MATH SNACKS - BAD DATE

RATIOS AND PROPORTIONS

Curators: Lauren Weller, Sarah Smogor, Amanda Atkinson, and William Stremple

This resource has students watch a video animation on ratio and proportions.  They are then engaged in practicing the skills need to solve different dating problems involving ratios and proportions.

ILLUMINATIONS - TURTLE POND

RELATIONSHIPS ON COORDINATE PLANE (GEOMETRY)

Curator: Aimee Muscoe

Students must plan a route for a turtle to get to a pond. The turtle and pond are located on a coordinate grid, students must look at the relationship of the two objects to determine how to get the turtle to the pond. This tool can help students with their understandings of direction, distance, location, and representation.

MR. SCHLYTTER'S MATHEMATICS SITE

ALL MATHEMATICS

This website is a compilation of different mathematical games for students use.  With over 300 links to different games and an easy to use search engine, this is a great resource for any teacher or student looking to find fun and entertaining ways to learn math.

MATH SNACKS - GAME OVER GOPHER

NUMBERS & OPERATIONS

ALGEBRA

GEOMETRY

Curator: Terry Cheng

This game is similar to defense tower games. The goal is to protect your prized carrot from hungry gophers. It uses a coordinate grid for students to place their carrot launchers to feed the gophers. By feeding the gophers, students earn “rubies” to buy and upgrade carrot launchers (and at higher levels, additional tools to defend against the hungry gophers). Students can also place Ruby Drillers on given coordinates to earn more rubies. The game starts with fourteen levels, each progressively more difficult and each presenting the mission of defending the carrot in different ways (similar to Angry Birds). Four challenge levels give players the opportunity to earn discs that can be used to unlock additional levels.

MATH PLAYGROUND - BUILDERS INC

GEOMETRY

Curator: Lauren Weller

Students can drag various geometric shapes to a coordinate plane and modify their size. Once a shape is on the grid, the program identifies the shape's perimeter and area. Students can compare perimeters and areas of different shapes and make inferences about the relationship between a shape's size and it's perimeter/area.

MATH PLAYGROUND - SAVE THE ZOGS

GRAPHING LINEAR EQUATIONS

Curator: Marcie Hughes

Little blue critters called Zogs are scattered across a grid. Find the linear equation of a line that will cross (and thus save) the most Zogs as possible!

MATH PLAYGROUND - ANGLES JEOPARDY

CLASSIFYING & MEASURING ANGLES

Curator: Jessica Johnson

This tech tool allows students to apply their knowledge of measuring and classifying angles in an engaging game. This is a fun way to assess your students' knowledge and can be used as individual practice, in partnerships or as a whole group review on a Smart Board.

HOT MATH - ALGEBRA VS THE COCKROACHES

GRAPHING LINEAR EQUATIONS

Curator: Hilary Pehrson

This interactive game (Algebra vs. The Cockroaches) is a great way for students to practice writing equations of lines in slope-intercept form from a graph. Students are progressing through rounds and each round gets slightly more advanced. The rounds start with horizontal lines, then oblique lines with a y-intercept of 0, and eventually to oblique lines with fractional slopes and whole number y-intercepts. The cockroaches travel along one line which students must be able to identify and write in slope-intercept form in order to fire their designated weapon and eliminate the cockroaches. If students do not respond in the allotted time the cockroaches win that round. This tech tool provides a fun way to practice identifying equations from graphs,
