Brief Description of Tech Tool: This tech tool allows students to apply their knowledge of measuring and classifying angles in an engaging game. This is a fun way to assess your students' knowledge and can be used as individual practice, in partnerships or as a whole group review on a Smart Board.

Technical & Cost considerations: This is a free website that is compatible with both Window and Apple Operating systems. It also works well on a Smart Board. There are no technical constraints that would hinder the use of this tech tool.

EVALUATION

Description of Learning Activity

This tech tool has a variety of uses. It can used on a Smart Board as a whole class review, or in small groups, partnerships or individually on computers. This tech tools provides a basic overview about angles (below the game), but not enough information to teach the concept or to explore a new mathematical idea. It would work best as a review or assessment after students have learned about classifying and measuring angles.

1. Learning Activity Types

LA- Assess- this tech tool can be used as a formative assessment to assess students' knowledge about measuring and classifying angles.

LA-Apply- this tech tool allows students to apply mathematics to problems and situations involving angles.

2. What mathematics is being learned?

NCTM Standards

NCTM-Geo-visualization - use visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling to solve problems.

VA SOL Strands

  • 8.6 a, b - The student will a) verify by measuring and describe the relationships among vertical angles, adjacent angles, supplementary angles, and complementary angles; and b) measure angles of less than 360°.

Proficiency Strands

PS-conceptual understanding: this tech tool allows you to see how well students comprehend the mathematical concepts of measuring and classifying angles.

PS-procedural fluency: this tech tool assess how accurately, efficiently and appropriately students carry out procedures of measuring and classifying angles.

PS-strategic competence: this tech tool shows students ability to formulate and solve angle problems.

Additional comments on what is being learned: Some questions allow students to use a virtual protractor to measure angles.

3. How is the mathematics represented?

The math in this tech tool has a virtual protractor to allow students to measure angles. It also provides many visuals for students to assess their knowledge of angles.

4. What role does technology play?

The main advantage that technology plays in this tech tool is that it creates a fun, interactive and engaging review for students to apply their knowledge of classifying and measuring angles. A disadvantage is that there is no support if students do not understand the concept.

Affordances of Technology for Supporting Learning

Representing Ideas & Thinking - this tech tool allows students think and visualize measuring and classifying angles in a different way

5. How does the technology fit or interact with the social context of learning?

This technology can be used by individuals, partnerships, small group or whole class. As a whole class review on the Smart Board it can promote collaboration by having students work in teams. This collaboration strengthen their understanding by promoting discussion. It can also be used in the computer as a review by students individually, in partnerships or as a small group. This tech tool provides flexibility as a review for classifying and measuring angles.

6. What do teachers and learners need to know?

This tech tool is simple to use. Teachers and students must understand how to play jeopardy. Students must also have knowledge of classifying and measuring angles.

7.  How could this resource supplement/facilitate PBL?

This resource can be used to supplement PBL.  This is a game that can be played by groups to gauge their understanding of the material presented during lessons.
