RWM - WATER PROBLEMS

NUMBERS & OPERATIONS

MEASUREMENT

DATA ANALYSIS & PROBABILITY

In Water Problems, students are faced with another real world scenario. Many places around the world have trouble getting water and need to travel great distances daily in order to survive. There are two locations, Burkina Faso and Nepal that students are asked to find the best route for people to travel to get water. This activity can be used as part of a unit on multicultural education or conservation of natural resources.

NUMBER SEQUENCES & OPERATIONS

Using Google Earth, students become mathematical code breakers to help Allied intelligence find and destroy Axis U-boats in World War II.  Students work to recognize and create rules for numerical sequences, use latitude and longitude to chart locations, and decipher and translate coded messages.

BUCK INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATION

BIE is a great resource for learning about Project-based learning.  On the Resource page, there are several links for items to; read, watch, and interact.  There is also a project search option that allows teachers and user to search for already created lessons based on the Common Core standards for math and Language Arts, but the lessons span all subject matter.  The search options can be used to locate very specific lessons and concepts which is a nice touch.  I have really enjoyed using this as a resource in my quest to learn more about PBL and I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to learn more about the topic.

ILLUMINATIONS - A LUNCH-IN AFFAIR

RATIOS & PROPORTIONS

EQUATIONS/EXPRESSIONS

This is a lesson plan that asks students to prepare and organize a luncheon for the entire class.  Students will work in commitees and be responsible for a different part of the event.  All additional materials are compiled within this resource as well.
